Plans for a West End transfer are reportedly in the works for the smash-hit stage adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro, it has been rumoured.

Producers are rumoured to be eyeing the Gillian Lynne theatre, for a potential West End transfer next year, though no details are confirmed.

My Neighbour Totoro follows schoolgirl Satsuke and her younger sister, Mei, as they settle into an old country house with their father and wait for their mother to recover from an illness in an area hospital. As the sisters explore their new home, they encounter and befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest, most notably the massive cuddly creature known as Totoro.

The celebrated 1988 animated feature film by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) is brought to the stage by its original composer Joe Hisaishi in a landmark new adaptation by the RSC (Matilda The Musical) written by playwright Tom Morton-Smith (Oppenheimer) in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV.

Directed by Phelim McDermott with production design by Tom Pye, costumes by Kimie Nakano, lighting by Jessica Hung Han Yun, and movement by You-Ri Yamanaka, the production features puppetry created by Basil Twist and music from Joe Hisaishi’s iconic score in a new orchestration by Will Stuart, performed live with sound design by Tony Gayle. Associate Director is Ailin Conant.

My Neighbour Totoro is currently playing the Barbican Theatre until 21st January 2023, with the entirety of the run sold out.
