⭐ A MOTHER’S SONG – A NEW FOLK MUSICAL – WORLD PREMIERE ANNOUNCED ⭐
The world premiere of A Mother’s Song – A New Folk Musical has been announced.
Co-created by award-winning Scottish composer Finn Anderson (Islander) and award-winning director Tania Azevedo (& Juliet, But I’m A Cheerleader), A Mother’s Song – A New Folk Musical is a new transatlantic musical spanning centuries and continents.
From 17th century Stirling to 21st century New York City, themes of identity, motherhood, and choice collide in a bold and life-affirming story which follows three remarkable women at different moments in history, and traces the incredible journey of Scottish folk music across the Atlantic.
Sarah comes from a long line of ballad singers, but has severed ties with the folk traditions of her childhood. In modern-day New York City, Sarah’s rediscovery of these songs and the family stories within them, force her to go on an unexpected and life-changing journey across time.
A Mother’s Song – A New Folk Musical features a score of brand-new songs alongside traditional Scottish and Appalachian ballads (including ‘The Four Marys’ and ‘Say Darlin’ Say’), in new arrangements created by Finn in collaboration with fiddler Laura Wilkie, percussionist Signy Jakobsdottir, and guitarist Jenny Clifford.
The show will feature an all-female live on-stage band and musical direction from Shonagh Murray who has recently worked on the blockbusting Six the Musical.
A Mother’s Song was originally developed with Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and American Music Theatre Project.
A Mother’s Song – A New Folk Musical will play Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling, running from 23th – 26th February 2023, with tickets on sale now.
