Sheridan Smith is set star in the world premiere of the brand-new musical John Cassavetes’ OPENING NIGHT, featuring songs by Rufus Wainwright and directed by Ivo van Hove, it has been announced.
The musical is set to play a strictly limited season at the Gielgud Theatre from March 2024.
Based on John Cassavetes’ legendary film, OPENING NIGHT follows a theatre company’s preparations to stage a major new play on Broadway. But drama ignites behind the scenes when their leading lady is rocked by tragedy, and her personal turmoil forces everybody to deliver the performance of their lives.
Acclaimed director Ivo van Hove (A Little Life), directed a non-musical version of the show for Dutch theatre company Toneelgroep Amsterdam in 2006, will return to the director’s chair for this new production. Singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright will write the songs for this new musical adaptation.
OPENING NIGHT is directed & conceived by Ivo van Hove, featuring set, lighting & video design by Jan Versweyveld, costume design by An D’Huys, sound design by Tom Gibbons and Alex Twiselton, orchestrations by Rufus Wainwright, musical supervision & musical direction by Nigel Lilley, movement & choreography by Polly Bennett, casting by Julia Horan CDG and associate director Daniel Raggett.
OPENING NIGHT has a book by Ivo van Hove, with music & lyrics by Rufus Wainwright.
OPENING NIGHT will play the Gielgud Theatre, running from 6th March – 27th July 2024, with tickets on sale now.
