⭐ MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO – LONDON RETURN ANNOUNCED – AUTUMN 2023 ⭐

The five-star, award-winning production of My Neighbour Totoro will return to the London Barbican for a strictly limited 18-week season this autumn, it has been announced.

My Neighbour Totoro follows schoolgirl Satsuke and her younger sister, Mei, as they settle into an old country house with their father and wait for their mother to recover from an illness in an area hospital. As the sisters explore their new home, they encounter and befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest, most notably the massive cuddly creature known as Totoro.

The celebrated 1988 animated feature film by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) is brought to the stage by its original composer Joe Hisaishi in a landmark new adaptation by the RSC (Matilda The Musical) written by playwright Tom Morton-Smith (Oppenheimer) in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV.

Directed by Phelim McDermott with production design by Tom Pye, costumes by Kimie Nakano, lighting by Jessica Hung Han Yun, and movement by You-Ri Yamanaka, the production features puppetry created by Basil Twist and music from Joe Hisaishi’s iconic score in a new orchestration by Will Stuart, performed live with sound design by Tony Gayle. Associate Director is Ailin Conant.

My Neighbour Totoro will play the Barbican Theatre, running from 21st November 2023 – 23rd March 2024. Priority booking for the show will open on 11th April, with public booking available from 21st April 2023.
