York Theatre Royal is delighted to announce the creative team for the world premiere of new musical Mayflies.

The show, which is part of York Theatre Royal’s Spring season, will run from 28th April – 13th May 2023 – telling a contemporary love story from its first flourish to its final goodbye.

The show is directed by the critically acclaimed Tania Azevedo who specialises in developing new work. Tania is currently Resident Director on & Juliet (West End) and has recently received “Best Director” nominations for Off-West-End Awards and Broadway World Awards for her work on the world premiere of But I’m a Cheerleader (Turbine Theatre) based on the cult LGBTQ+ film .

The designer for Mayflies will be TK Hay, whose recent credits include Constellations (Stephen Joseph Theatre), Making of a Monster (Wales Millenium Centre), and The Apology (New Earth Theatre). Funny, intimate and relatable, Mayflies tells the story of a romantic relationship between May and Fly. After swiping right, left, up and down across the dating apps, May and Fly match. They begin a tentative conversation. Over time their romance grows into something real, something special. Then they meet… It explores the different versions of themselves that people become during relationships and how – in the blink of an eye – it can all come crashing down.

Casting is currently underway and will be announced later this year.

Mayflies will play the York Theatre Royal, running from 28th April – 13th May 2023.
