The London premiere of new musical ASIAN PIRATE MUSICAL has been announced.
ASIAN PIRATE MUSICAL is a queer time travel pirate musical set on Southeast Asian seas, coming to Upstairs At The Gatehouse this Summer.
Drawing on the real histories of 14th century Muslim navigator Zheng He and 19th century pirate queen Sek Yeong, alongside the imagined futures of 21st century climate survivors and 23rd century space revolutionaries, ASIAN PIRATE MUSICAL is a new legend on the high seas.
This genre-devouring soundtrack brings together traditionalinstruments, 21st century Asian pop, and diasporic musical influences.
Following the sold-out work-in-progress run at The Vaults (2020), a concert showcase at the Pleasance (2024), and a 2025 studio cast album, this is the first full production after 6 years of development.
Starring Yñaqui Tuason-Inocian as Zheng He, Nabilah Hamid as Riang, Ashley Goh as Nazar, Rai Endah as Keliling and Amanda Maud as Sek Yeong.
ASIAN PIRATE MUSICAL is directed by Zhui Ning Chang, with dramaturgy by Frey Kwa Hawking, lead composing by Jade Leamcharaskul, choreography by Wenning Wang, set & costume design by Mikayla Teodoro, lighting design by John Chan, sound design & mixing by Vincci Chung, production stage management by Ghost Chan, associate design by Naomi Zhang, graphic design by Syahirah Afifah and produced by Florian Lim and Nemo Martin.
Supported by Arts Council England, Lincoln Arts Centre and University of Lincoln, New Diorama Theatre, Kakilang, and New Earth Theatre.
