⭐ PLAY ON! – MUSICAL REVIVAL BY TALAWA – UK TOUR & LONDON RUN ANNOUNCED ⭐
The UK’s outstanding Black theatre company Talawa has announced a revival of the musical PLAY ON!
PLAY ON! is a joyous retelling of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night vividly brings to life the 1940s New York jazz scene, set to a timeless, toe-tapping Duke Ellington soundtrack, directed by Talawa’s artistic director Michael Buffong.
In the Cotton Club, New York City, a young songwriter arrives ready to make her name – but disguising herself as a man will give her a better shot in a male-dominated music world. As she meets club owner The Duke and sensational singer Lady Liv, Vy is swept up in a syncopated symphony of melodies, mistaken identities and romance.
PLAY ON! has been announced as the centre of Talawa’s Black Joy season, a partnership between Talawa, Olivier Award-winning J Clare Productions and Chuchu Ngawu Productions, which aims to celebrate Black stories and creatives throughout the year, helping to produce new shows and support emerging writers and artists.
PLAY ON! will tour the UK this Autumn, playing Belgrade Theatre (23rd Sept – 5th Oct), Liverpool Everyman (15th-19th Oct), Salisbury Playhouse (21st Oct – 2nd Nov), Birmingham Hippodrome (4th – 9th Nov), heading into 2025 playing the Bristol Old Vic (16th – 25th Jan), culminating with a run at London’s Lyric Hammersmith (28th Jan – 22nd Feb).
PLAY ON! was conceived by Sheldon Epps, with a book by Cheryl L. West and music by Duke Ellington.
