⭐ STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S PACIFIC OVERTURES – LONDON REVIVAL SET FOR MENIER CHOCOLATE FACTORY ⭐
Stephen Sondheim’s Pacific Overtures is set for a London revival, coming to the Menier Chocolate Factory, it has been revealed.
The new revival is to be presented as a co-production between Japan and the UK.
The musical is the first co-production between the Menier Chocolate Factory and Japan’s Umeda Arts Theatre.
The Menier Chocolate Factory is one of London’s most prestigious theatres, known for producing bold, highly artistic works. Umeda Arts Theatre is one of the most prestigious theatre companies in Japan.
The work chosen for this first collaboration is legendary Stephen Sondheim’s ambitious Pacific Overtures. The collaboration of Japanese and Western creators will lead the process of reimaging this one of a kind work, which is essentially a story of Japan told through the eyes of Western artists.
The new production will be directed by Matthew White (Top Hat) and feature a top-tier creative team along with a highly acclaimed cast consisting of Japan’s leading actors.
Commodore Matthew Perry’s 1853 mission to open trade relations with isolationist Japan through gunboat diplomacy forges an unlikely friendship between the samurai, Kayama, and the Americanized fisherman, Manjiro. Kayama and Manjiro – and all of Japanese society – must face the wave of Westernization that follows.
Pacific Overtures has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by John Weidman, with additional material by Hugh Wheeler.
Pacific Overtures will play the Menier Chocolate Factory, running from 25th November 2023 – 24th February 2024.
