⭐ ANYONE CAN WHISTLE – STARRING ALEX YOUNG – ANNOUNCED FOR SOUTHWARK PLAYHOUSE ⭐
A new production of Stephen Sondheim’s Anyone Can Whistle is coming to Southwark Playhouse, it has been announced.
Alex Young will lead the production starring as Mayoress Cora Hoover Hooper, with further casting to be announced soon.
Anyone Can Whistle tells the story of a corrupt mayoress who fakes a miracle to revitalize her bankrupt town (through the resulting pilgrim trade) and the ill-fated romance between the rational nurse, out to expose the fraud, and the easygoing doctor who is determined to enjoy the chaos that it brings.
A legendary cult show, this wacky, intelligent, highly unconventional musical points ahead to Stephen Sondheim’s groundbreaking work in the 1970’s even as it keeps a foot firmly rooted in musical theatre’s “golden age.”
The new revival is set to be directed by Matthew Rankcom (they/them), with musical direction by Natalie Pound (she/her), choreography by Lisa Stevens (she/her), orchestrator Charlie Ingles (he/him) with original orchestrations by Don Walker (he/him). Also set and costume design by Cory Shipp (she/her), lighting design by Alex Musgrave (he/him) and assistant direction by Alex Conder (he/him).
Anyone Can Whistle has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim with a book by Arthur Laurents.
Anyone Can Whistle is set to play The Large at Southwark Playhouse, running from 1st April – 7th May 2022.
