A new revival of the award-winning musical Oliver! is reportedly being planned for 2022, it is rumoured.

Cameron Mackintosh has reportedly began plans to bring the beloved musical back on stage, with the show not having been in the West End since 2011.

The new revival will reportedly be coming to the Prince Edward Theatre after Mary Poppins closes.

The last revival of the show was preceded by the talent show – I’d Do Anything, a TV show that searched for a new, unknown lead to play Nancy and three young performers who would take it in turns to play Oliver in the revival. That show gave us future stars of stage & screen such as Rachel Tucker, Samantha Barks, Jessie Buckley and eventual winner Jodie Prenger.

In addition to having produced Cats, The Phantom Of The Opera, Les Misérables (musical & film) and Miss Saigon, among many other shows, Mackintosh is a West End theater landlord and the majority shareholder of the licensing firm Music Theatre International (MTI).

Speaking of Musical Theatre International, the rights to which Oliver! are currently held state “…We are unable to consider licensing productions scheduled to take place after 1st August 2021…”, a tell-tell sign that something is happening.

Lionel Bart’s classic musical Oliver! is based on Charles Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist. The Tony and Olivier Award-winning show is one of the few musicals to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece.

I would absolutely love this show to come back, I’ve never seen a professional production before and it’s one of my favourite musicals, so I’d be there front row, opening night! ! !
