⭐ STUDIO GHIBLI’S MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO TO BE ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY THE RSC – BARBICAN THEATRE – OCTOBER 2022 ⭐

Studio Ghibli’s animated classic My Neighbour Totoro is to be adapted for the stage by the RSC, it has been announced.

Created in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV, the theatrical adaptation will premiere at the Barbican Theatre later this year.

The acclaimed 1988 animated tale by director Hayao Miyazaki, follows schoolgirl Satsuke and her younger sister, Mei, as they settle into an old country house with their father and wait for their mother to recover from an illness in an area hospital. As the sisters explore their new home, they encounter and befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest, most notably the massive cuddly creature known as Totoro.

The film has been adapted for the stage by Tom Morton-Smith (Oppenheimer). The new stage production will blend music, puppetry and storytelling to bring Miyazaki’s tale to life.

Joe Hisaishi’s beloved score will also be performed live in the show, with new orchestrations by Will Stuart.

My Neighbour Totoro will be directed by Phelim McDermott, with production design by Tom Pye, costumes by Kimie Nakano, lighting by Jessica Hung Han, sound design by Tony Gayle and movement by You-Ri Yamanaka, The production will also feature puppetry created by Basil Twist.

My Neighbour Totoro will play a 15-week season at the Barbican Theatre, with performances from 8th October 2022. Tickets go on general sale from 19th May 2022.
