The stage musical adaptation of Groundhog Day is set to return to London, it has been confirmed.

In an interview with Claudia Winkleman, Groundhog Day – The Musical composer Tim Minchin confirmed the news, commenting: “…I have fantastic news, although I’m not allowed to announce it very specifically, but I can’t give you details but Groundhog Day is coming back, for a limited run in London, probably another year away…”

Groundhog Day – The Musical originally made its world premiere at The Old Vic in London in Summer 2016, with a critically acclaimed limited run. The production was nominated for 8 Olivier Awards, winning for Best New Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for Andy Karl.

It transferred to Broadway in April 2017 and was met with critical acclaim but the show closed in September 2017.

Groundhog Day is the story of Phil Connors, a cynical Pittsburgh TV weatherman who is sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in the isolated small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, when he finds himself caught in a time loop, forced to repeat the same day again and againand again. As each day plays out exactly the same as before Phil becomes increasingly despondent, but is there a lesson to be learnt through his experiences, will he ever unlock the secret and break the cycle?

Groundhog Day – The Musical has music and lyrics by Tim Minchin (Matilda), and book by Danny Rubin. Based on the classic 1993 film of the same name, from an original story by Rubin, screenplay by Rubin and Harold Ramis.
